Hayk Karoyi

Hayk Karoyi

Musician, multi-instrumentalist, cultural fusionist

Hayk, a multi-instrumentalist specialising in Armenian woodwinds, draws the full range of his cultural identity from the subconscious through his instruments. You can hear the vibrant Mediterranean palette and the rich diversity of Armenian medieval culture. With mixed roots blending East Mediterranean and Armenian influences, he’s never aimed to be purely Armenian — in his music or in himself. His sound is a fusion, an ongoing experiment — never complete, always evolving, always searching for something new.

Music is a place where I can speak without words. It’s stronger than language. Music is life itself. It has fed me, moved through me, and let me say what I can’t say in any other way.

Tools

Wind instruments are a powerful practice — one note a day can change your body and mind. They teach you to breathe, to listen, to hold sound like a pulse.

Workspace

Even in the centre of Yerevan, I created a space that felt like another world. But nothing compares to recording on a mountain with friends — headphones on, wind in the mic.

I'm proud of

Releasing myself through music. What I create is a release of who I am in this moment. That’s the work I’m proud of. Years later, I might listen and think, “I miss the person I was when I made this.”

Driven by...

Nature, people, rhythm, silence — everything inspires me. The sea, a stranger, a breath. I’m sensitive to it all. That’s why I often seek calm places, to stay connected with what’s moving inside.

Tips

Do it with sincerity. Let go of the old and trust the new. If you’re going to do something, do it honestly. Forget how you used to think and stay open to your future self. Everything becomes possible when you focus from the inside out.
